So I was, my little slice of biotechnology was working with the Human Genome Project, starting in ’87 and it wasn’t even called the Human Genome project then. But, I think what my company had was a collaborative spirit that worked with researchers and various universities all over the country and even all over the world, to collaborate to build the tools necessary to sequence the Human Genome and distribute those tools worldwide. Because one lab may come up with the best way of cloning and making a library, other people need that library, we were sort of the distribution arm of collecting all of those tools and redistributing it out to other companies, other researchers.

Jim Hudson scientist and businessmen who founded Research Genetics in 1987, the company that made synthetic DNA. He received a dual major in chemistry and physics from the University of Alabama and studied molecular biology. His company was very successful and dominated the market for synthetically made DNA in USA. That allowed Research Genetics to play a main role in the Human Genome Project. Company was sold in 2000 to Invitrogen.

Jim Hudson is co-founder of HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville. Together with his wife he formed a biodefense company, Concero Scientific.
